About This Blog

{Wisdom from James}

Welcome!

This blog is dedicated to the study of the Epistle of James. It is still under construction, so I don't have all of the studies written, and I'm still tweaking what I have. I'd be glad to hear your suggestions for improvement. Please overlook any formatting and font glitches.

Each of the 12 Bible passages listed below will have three posts.

  • "Read + Reflect + Respond" is for your own devotional experience with the Scripture passage.
  • "My Reflections" contains my expanded paraphrase, an essay, web links, and some of my poetry.
  • "Study Helps" has alternate Bible versions, textual notes (sometimes), related verses, and commentaries on the passage.

Here are the current linked posts, as well as the upcoming ones.

Someone asked how I decided to start this blog, and why the book of James?

My answer to the second question was simply, "It comes after Hebrews." That's not mystical. It just happened that I had been reading and studying the book of Hebrews for my own devotional time, and then decided to keep going on with the very next book.

At the time, I was reading the passages on my phone, copying them in to the Day One journal app, and then tapping in my comments and paraphrases. One day I decided to share a paraphrased passage on Facebook, and friends who like it encouraged me to write a devotional. I considered compiling an e-book to sell online, but after talking to an old friend who has published e-books, I decided on a different plan. This material seems more suited to a blog with links from one place to another. People can click on what they want to see, whether it is a different facet of the same passage, or links to articles on other websites or on my other blogs. So instead of a project with monetary profit, it's more a labor of love. It's also a way to gear up my brain for starting seminary in the fall. I'm learning a lot about the Scripture passages as I study them. So there's that.

Oh, and if you've got extra money to throw around, send it to one of the charities that I link on these pages. Here are some of them. I'll try to keep this list updated as I post each passage.

  • Carry the Future provides practical emergency relief such as baby supplies to refugee families.
  • Compassion International provides educational, medical, nutritional, and other support to impoverished people overseas.
  • Worldwide Orphans has a multi-faceted approach to physical , mental, emotional, and social needs of orphans.
  • Lifesong for Orphans helps orphans through adoptions and foster care.

Enjoy!

P.S. Photo credit for the butterfly goes to my daughter Joanna Carey. She snapped this one in my mother's garden right after mom's funeral in 2013. I always think of this butterfly as a symbol of rising with grace and beauty from a time of adversity.

The other photos are mine unless noted. They will likely be a mix of nature photos and classic art.
